Some voices will echo for all time, as they are so unique among all others. One such voice is that of Elizabeth Inkster. Her love for music and amazing voice permeated the Haida Gwaii landscape for many years. Elizabeth, along with five or six other local music lovers, invested their own money in the music festival when it first moved to Tlell in 1999. If memory serves us, they didn’t lose any money that year, and the music festival has grown considerably in the ensuing years.
Elizabeth Inkster passed away on Christmas Day, 2012, after a short battle with colon cancer. The 2013 Edge of the World Music Festival will be dedicated in her honour, with the broad theme of ‘voice’ guiding our planning. We are saddened to lose yet another long time contributor to the music festival, but, once again, feel renewed in our dedication to always continue what these great festival pioneers began. In that spirit, we are pleased to announce the we raised $1675.00 at the 2012 festival; which was donated to the Northern BC Cancer Fund here on Haida Gwaii. This money will go towards supporting islanders battling cancer.
We are currently looking for 2013 logo submissions! Artists, established or aspiring, are encouraged to submit a logo design by March 9th 2013. A design that evokes a feeling of voice would be amazing, but all designs are welcomed and encouraged. One or two colour designs are preferable. As with past years, the winning submission will receive a free weekend pass to the festival, as well as a t-shirt with their logo!
Planning is well underway for the 2013 festival, with volunteer positions rapidly filling up. There are still a few available, however, and plenty of ways to get involved. We are still looking for a Kids Zone Coordinator, Fringe, Promotions, Camping, and more…
Last year’s festival was another great success. We are so grateful that locals and tourists alike come and enjoy the show and support our efforts. It was particularly great to see local youth get involved in the production end of creating this festival. I hope those youth who are still on island will get involved again (you’re ‘seasoned’ volunteers now!) along with anyone else who has an interest.
Musicians who come to our festival are so amazed by the spirit of Haida Gwaii. They can’t believe the quality of food we offer (thanks Roberta Olsen!) and the quality of show that we put on. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank, once again, the countless volunteers, businesses, local musicians, Haida performers, and festival patrons that make our Edge of the World Music Festival the gem that it is.
